PUBLIC NOTICE: Call for Plover Stewardship Volunteers
The Town of Wasaga Beach is seeking local volunteers to support the municipal stewardship of Piping Plovers—an endangered shorebird species that nests along our famous shoreline.
As the Town begins to manage and care for more of our beachfront, we are building a coordinated, community-based stewardship program grounded in science and established conservation practices, supported by federal and provincial partners.
We are inviting individuals to contribute to this important work as part of a disciplined, community-supported approach to stewardship during the upcoming nesting season. Volunteers will play an important role in supporting monitoring and public education.
Volunteer responsibilities may include:
- Monitoring nesting areas and observing plover activity
- Supporting public education and awareness on the beach
- Assisting with the protection of nesting sites and sensitive habitat
- Working alongside Town staff and partner organizations
Ideal candidates must have:
- Experience with piping plover monitoring and habitat stewardship, or a strong willingness to learn
- An interest in conservation and protecting species at risk
- Comfort engaging with the public in a respectful, educational role
- Availability during the nesting season, including some early mornings and weekends
Training and coordination will be provided to ensure all volunteers are equipped to support this work safely and effectively.
Protecting piping plovers is a shared responsibility. The Town is committed to a disciplined, evidence-based approach to stewardship and values the contributions of community members who are willing to be part of that effort.
Interested individuals may apply here.
We thank all applicants who apply for this position, but only those selected for interviews will be contacted.
In accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, personal information is collected under the authority of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, Chapter 25, as amended, and will be used for the purpose of candidate selection.
