Reconstruction will help build Destination Wasaga by making this vital economic corridor flood and climate resilient
“For year-round hotels, shops, restaurants, and attractions to succeed along our beachfront, we need to rebuild Beach Drive and make it climate resilient. This is an essential first step to build Destination Wasaga and transform Wasaga Beach into a true four-season destination." — Mayor Brian Smith
WASAGA BEACH – Fall in Wasaga Beach is in full swing, and so is work to reinvent the town’s commercial area along Beach Drive at Beach Area 1. As construction continues along Beach Drive between Spruce Street and 2nd Street, we're offering you all the latest updates and a birds-eye view.
Here's what's happening now
- Beach Drive has started to be built up between Spruce Street and 2nd Street; this work will continue until the road is raised about 5 feet (≈1.5 m) to mitigate flooding risks. Crews continue to install the sheet piling and retaining wall along Beach Drive, which will make it stronger and more climate resilient.
- Storm and watermain work has been happening on Main Street, and a wastewater pumping station is being built on Beach Drive at 1st Street.
- Road works for Spruce Street are about to begin, including some excavation and paving. Following this, new curbs and electrical road crossings will be installed.
- Construction is well underway for Phase One of The Breakers development on 2nd Street, with roofs completed and windows being installed on the mixed-use buildings that feature commercial ground floor spaces.
- A premium Marriott hotel is scheduled to begin construction in 2026.
- Work on the Town's Destination Wasaga Master Plan is set to begin, with an award-winning team being announced in September, and community engagement beginning this fall.
3 Things to Remember:
- Businesses remain open during construction.
- Fall is a beautiful time to visit Wasaga Beach! Roadway construction on Beach Drive will not impact the beach itself or any other Beach Areas.
- We appreciate the high level of public interest in this project ❤️ Members of the public can continue to access the beachfront and the boardwalk as usual at Beach Area 1, between Second Street and Third Street, and from the Town’s Spruce Street parking lot.
Quick Facts
- In January 2025, Council welcomed the largest infrastructure investment in the history of Wasaga Beach when the Ontario government announced that it would invest $10.9 million to help fund about half of the costs of the redevelopment of Beach Drive. The other half of this project will be funded by developers.
- In May 2025, the Town of Wasaga Beach welcomed Premier Doug Ford and Ontario Minister of Tourism Stan Cho to town, along with news that the province will invest $38 million to help build Destination Wasaga.
