Age Friendly Community For Seniors

What is an age-friendly community?

An age-friendly community is designed to help seniors live safely, enjoy good health and stay involved.

As part of its Global Age-friendly Cities Project, the World Health Organization identifies eight key areas of community life that can become more age-friendly:

  • Outdoor spaces and buildings
  • Transportation
  • Housing
  • Respect and social inclusion
  • Civic participation and employment
  • Communication and information
  • Community support and health services
  • Social participation

The Town of Wasaga Beach recognizes the importance of addressing the special needs of this demographic. In 2015 Council initiated an Age-Friendly Community Plan. Results of the Plan’s needs assessment indicate that there are gaps in the municipality’s services. The plan outlines 18 goals that address priorities related to: infrastructure, housing, service and support, health care, leadership and engagement.

Age Friendly Community Advisory Committee

The population of Wasaga Beach, similar to many other parts of Ontario, is aging but Wasaga Beach has also become a favorite Retirement destination as individuals leave the hustle of city life behind to enjoy a quieter, slower paced lifestyle. In order to meet the needs of our aging population, we need to ensure accessible services and programs are in place. We are working with our Age Friendly Community Advisory Committee to improve our services.

About the Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee

The Age-Friendly Community (AFC) Advisory Committee operates as a Standing Advisory Committee of Town Council.

The Committee is reflective of the residents of Wasaga Beach, with particular inclusion of the seniors demographic and those that represent the interest of seniors in the community.

The Committee is tasked with determining how best to implement the goals of the plan. This includes developing a communication plan between Town Council, the committee and community residents. The committee will also be establishing action plans to best execute the goals of the plan.

For more information on its members, agendas and minutes please see our Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee page.
