Background
In 2019, the province announced that significant changes would be made to policing services with the passage of Bill 68, the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA). The Act came into force and effect on April 1st, 2024, and replaces the Police Services Act (PSA). The new Community Safety and Policing Act is seen as an opportunity to modernize policing and enhance community safety in Ontario.
Under the new Act is the creation of OPP Detachment Boards, which are required to be established for each detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. Huronia West OPP is a detachment that services the Township of Clearview, Township of Springwater and Town of Wasaga Beach.
Board Composition & Recruitment Opportunity
The Huronia West OPP Detachment Board is comprised of eleven (11) members as follows:
- Six (6) Council Member Representatives (two from each municipality)
- Three (3) Community Representatives (one from each municipality)
- Two (2) Provincial Representatives (to be appointed by the province)
This recruitment opportunity is for the three (3) Community Representatives (one from each municipality) to sit on the Board.
Mandate
Under the Community Safety and Policing Act, the key roles and responsibilities of the newly formed Huronia West OPP Detachment Board are to:
- consult with the Commissioner regarding the selection of a detachment commander and otherwise participate, in accordance with the regulations made by the Minister, in the selection of the detachment commander;
- determine objectives and priorities for the detachment, not inconsistent with the strategic plan prepared by the Minister, after consultation with the detachment commander or his or her designate;
- advise the detachment commander with respect to policing provided by the detachment;
- monitor the performance of the detachment commander;
- review the reports from the detachment commander regarding policing provided by the detachment; and
- on or before June 30 in each year, provide an annual report to the municipalities and band councils regarding the policing provided by the detachment in their municipalities or First Nation reserves.
Eligibility
Potential applicants are not eligible if they are:
- A judge or justice of the peace
- A member of a police service, special constable, or a First Nation Officer
- Someone practicing criminal law (either defense or prosecution)
- A director, officer, or employee of any policing provider
- A former officer of the Huronia West OPP Detachment (if you left less than a year ago)
Expectations and Compensation
Board members are expected to complete mandatory training as per the Community Safety and Policing Act, follow and adhere to the Members of Police Services Boards Code of Conduct and attend meetings as determined by the Board with no fewer than four meetings each year.
Members will serve for the remainder of the 2022-2026 term of Council and will be compensated for their meeting attendance. Remuneration is set at $150.00 per meeting.
Once appointed, members will be required to submit a current police record check (completed in the last 12 months).
