Beach 1 & 2 Development Project
The Town completed a Visioning Project for Beach Area 1
& 2 in 2011 with input from the public along the way. The purpose of the visioning exercise was to
develop a long-term vision for the future of the main tourist beach area in
Wasaga Beach that Council could put forward as representing the thoughts and
wishes of the community. Council
identified the implementation of the Strategic Vision as a priority and then approved
the implementation of the plan.
Starting in 2012, continuing in 2013 and now into 2014 Council has done the groundwork for the re-development of Beach Area 1 & 2. Council has worked with staff and outside experts to develop a series of policies to direct and encourage the development outlined in the vision. The final work on these policies is now complete and will be presented to Council this September. The new policies include:
- Official Plan and Zoning Amendments for the area to encourage development
- Community Improvement Initiatives in the Official Plan to preserve and enhance public space and access
Council also undertook a hotel feasibility study for the Beach Area 2 lands that indicated that the property could support a 80 unit resort style hotel integrated with residential uses and public amenities on the 10 acres of Town owned land.
To complement this work Council has embarked on physical improvements to the streetscape along Mosley Street from Spruce Street to 3rd Street to improve pedestrian access and make the area more welcoming for residents and visitors. The first phase of these improvements is currently underway and will be completed this fall at a cost of $847,000. The second phase will be considered as part of the 2015 Capital Budget. These works are in the public spaces along Mosley Street and surrounding areas that are intended to be permanent and complement the eventual redevelopment of the private properties in the area. Funding for this work is coming from reserves that will be paid back when the Town sells some of the land it has assembled in the area to developers willing to develop their lands in keeping with Council's vision.
Council also directed that more events be moved to the Playland Parking lot and supported the move with the purchase of a portable stage. This past year several community and special events have been held in the parking lot, re-named as Festival Square when events are taking place. The intent is to use this space for festivals and events that residents and visitors can enjoy along with the beautiful beach. Stay tuned as more events are planned for the space in 2015.
