Age-Friendly Community For Seniors
Wasaga Beach is one of the fastest growing communities in Canada. According to data from the 2016 Census, Wasaga Beach now has a population of 20,675. This is an increase of 17.9% since 2011. Much of the growth can be attributed to a wave of seniors choosing to retire in the community.
The number of mature adults settling in Wasaga Beach grew by 36.3% between 2006 and 2011. This influx has resulted in a median age of 52 in the community.
The Town of Wasaga Beach recognizes the importance of addressing the special needs of this demographic. In 2015 Council initiated an Age-Friendly Community Plan. Results of the Plan’s needs assessment indicate that there are gaps in the municipality’s services. The plan outlines 18 goals that address priorities related to: infrastructure, housing, service and support, health care, leadership and engagement.
Based on the recommendations of the Age-Friendly Community plan, development and implantation of these goals was tasked to an Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee which operates as a Standing Advisory Committee of Town Council.
The AFC Advisory Committee is reflective of the residents of Wasaga Beach, with particular inclusion of the seniors demographic and those that represent the interest of seniors in the community.
The AFC Advisory Committee is tasked with determining how best to implement the goals of the plan. This includes developing a communication plan between Town Council, the committee and community residents. The committee will also be establishing action plans to best execute the goals of the plan.
