Business in Motion Forum tackles tough issue of staffing
shortage in Southern Georgian Bay
Wasaga Beach – Staffing shortages have become an issue for sectors ranging from
tourism to manufacturing.
The South Georgian Bay Regional Labour Supply Task Force has identified seven leading
causes of this issue. The next Business in Motion Forum on October 19 will focus on
discussing two particular challenges:
 Attainable accommodation
 Affordable transportation
“Addressing these challenges with creative solutions that involve private and public
collaboration are critical to unlocking the next wave of economic growth here in Southern
Georgian Bay,” commented Savanna Myers, manager of economic development, Grey
County.
She will be opening the forum with a short stage-setting presentation that summarizes
the work of the Regional Labour Supply Task Force, a group of private and public
organizational representatives formed under the leadership of Andrew Seigwart, president,
Blue Mountain Village Association.
The group is tasked with developing longer-term strategies to address regional labour
supply issues.
“The forum on October 19 promises to be one of the most dynamic discussions we have
had yet. Staffing Shortage is an acute workplace issue facing many employers,” added
Martin Rydlo, director of marketing and business development for the Town of Collingwood,
who has been a key driver behind the Business in Motion forums since they began in 2015
with a presentation by demographer Dr. David Foote.
This forum’s focus is a direct follow-up to the spring forum, which ranked employment
resources as the leading challenge in the region. Its importance is underlined by regional
organizations taking guiding roles at the forum, including Simcoe and Grey counties, the
Town of Wasaga Beach, the Town of The Blue Mountains, the Town of Collingwood,
Zeifmans Accounting and Consulting, The Centre for Business and Economic
Development, the Small Business Enterprise Centre, Dunn Capital Corporation, Ace Cabs,
Georgian Triangle Development Institute, Share the Road Cycling Coalition, Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce and Westin Trillium House, Blue Mountain.
The forum will feature a fast-moving set of conversations using the Pro-action Café model facilitated by Christy Deere, experiential learning facilitator at Leap 2 Learn. The Pro-action Café will include three rounds of guided community conversations including ‘report-backs’ to all those in attendance. The results from the guided interactive conversations will also create a foundation for a post-forum summary of ideas and opportunities.
As a reflection of the regional importance of these sharing and networking events, Business in Motion is being hosted outside of Collingwood for the first time. “Wasaga Beach is an important part of the Southern Georgian Bay economy so we are excited to be hosting business and organizational leaders, from entrepreneurs to Presidents, CEOs and HR professionals here at the Marlwood Golf and Country Club,” commented Johanna Griggs, economic development officer for the Town of Wasaga Beach. Tickets are only $30 including lunch for the forum on October 19, taking place from 11:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Seating is limited and tickets will not be available at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at: www.businessinmotionsgb.ca
